Questions to Ask a Deck Builder
Make your first conversation count. Bring your ideas, then ask about the structure, materials, schedule and exactly what the estimate includes.

Content updated
Ask questions that produce a drawing, a product specification, or a written responsibility. Those records make deck proposals easier to compare than broad promises of quality.
Design and structure
Who designs the foundations and connections? Which parts of the existing deck were inspected? How will the chosen decking be supported? What changes if we add a roof later? Ask how the design addresses stairs, guards, flashing, and drainage.
Materials and finish
What exact boards, fasteners, rails, and trim are included? Can we see physical samples? Who applies the initial finish if wood is selected? Obtain product documentation and clarify differences between material and workmanship warranties.
Site and approvals
Who confirms jurisdiction, handles any permits, and schedules inspections? How will the house and yard be protected? Who removes debris? What temporary arrangements are needed while an exterior door has no usable deck?
Price and changes
Which quantities support the estimate? What is excluded? How are hidden defects documented and priced? Compare payment milestones with completed work. Keep a copy of the scope budget beside each proposal.
